When PM's are not personal
« on: August 22, 2009, 02:05:42 PM »
As some might be aware I post Myoko info on a few other different forums. However there is one major player who appears quite anally retentive when it comes to information. Apart from the fact they do not allow links of any kind - even if those links are useful and relative - they now READ and DELETE personal messages.

Last month I was PM'ed by someone looking for info on long term accom in Myoko. I provided some brief feedback (with links) and told him I'd get back later with more - but to email me if I forgot. When I went back 2 days later to provide extra info not only had all my PM's been deleted but the PM function had been disabled.

So I sent out a query email:

This was the reply:

> Please let me know your login name and if you don't mind password and on
> Monday we will look into this for you.

So I reluctantly give my password and let them go snooping around my account. I know there's no need for this but I'm prepared to play the game for awhile

So they come back with:

> Thanks for the mail.
> I logged in and again couldn't see anything particularly out of place.
> As such can you please elaborate again on what you are experiencing here?

Won't contact them? Yeah right. Anyway, I remind them to look in an obvious place.

And this is the reply - from an admin of major ski forum too. If any doubt of skullduggery remains it is firmly erased by now.

So a couple of weeks go by with no action so I drop them a couple of reminder emails. I know it's futile but might as well remind them I haven't forgotten.

Of course the tech guys are not free!

Email#1

Email#2

Passing on PM's - that's a good one. The poor lad is obviously just wanting me to go away. So I contact one of the creators of UBB Boards (used by this particular forum) and query him re reading and deleting of personal messages. I then, in a final act of, "Yes, I do want you to know that I realise what's really going on here", I send this message.

Hi ###,

I've been doing some research to help out.

If you'd like to try again yourself it doesn't seem too difficult and you don't have to access via my account. I have been told that enabling/disabling on PM's is done by site admin through the Site Permissions area in the control panel. If PMs are enabled, as they seem to be for most members, the member would probably be in a group where the "Total # of Private Topics" is set to 0 or -1 for that group. It may be that, for whatever reason, I am in some sort of 'black group'. So what you can do is check what group I am in and then check the permissions for that group. Then either change the permissions or just put me back into the standard group that has pm's enabled. According to my source this shouldn't take more than 3-5 minutes to do.

As for viewing/deleting my prior pm's, it could have be done via SQL commands or through PHPMMyAdmin but I hope that was just some sort of glitch.

And there's never been a reply since.

I used to have a lot of links to their site from 'Ski the Heart of Japan' but have now deleted them all. In a way I'm still hoping that I'm wrong and that this apparent blacklisting will turn out to be a glitch. If otherwise - shoga nai ne!

It was a faint hope - but a false one. They've now been in and snipped my 'signature' too.

Also there's been a couple of the long-time posters being quite negative in threads relating to Myoko. Possible pissed-off mods perhaps?  ???

It's a bit sad really. Maybe they find it a bit threatening to have 'Ski the Heart of Japan' doing so well in the search results.  ;) Don't fret guys - I'm not out to shatter your business plans.

Not even sure I can with this forum set-up Pika.  ??? Wouldn't do it even if I could. Web 2.0 requires a bit more of a freewheeling attitude.

...and now I have stalkers.  :o There's some sad folk out there.  >:(

Maybe I'll just not post there anymore. Probably what they want, but I'm not sure I can be bothered anymore really. I've been flamed, stalked, accused, had my pm's read and deleted, plus my avatar function blocked. Hardly conducive to good interaction.

Last post on this matter.

I emailed the mod to tell I wasn't going to post there anymore as it was just too much hassle.

I was written a long reply pretty much denying everything, saying I was being 'dramatic' and that they just don't have time to 'fix' my pm's. The funny thing is that he could've fixed the pm's in much shorter time than it took him to write his lengthy denial.

I could have continued on with a war of words but it's simply not worth it. I daresay they won't miss me.
