Tell me Aussies - Thredbo v Suginohara
« on: July 01, 2008, 02:42:52 PM »
Longest run in Australia/NZ:
Thredbo (the great 'Funnel Web') 5.9km

Longest run in Japan:
Suginohara 8.5km

Okay, so Suginohara is longer.  ;D But is it better?  ???

Opinions please!
Look! Out on the slopes...it's Pikachu-ski!

I haven't boarded Thredbo for probably ten years. After a couple of seasons in Japan I went back to Oz for a holiday and spent a couple of days in Thredbo. I had always really liked Thredders but after living in Japan the snow was just a joke.  >:( At Suginohara I can have less crowds, cheaper lift tickets, cheaper places to stay and lots of great snow (if not awesome powder). If you want to party though - Thredbo hands down...  ;D ;D ;D ;D
A bad day snowboarding is waaaay better than a good day at work

Surely there is no real question. Anywhere that has "real" powder and does not have to rely on snow making has to beat every resort in Australia. I will be able to tell you soon.

Also, I am pretty sure that Funnel web isn't the longest ski run - we wish! And most of the time you cannot ski it and when you can ski it you trash your skis.
The "longest ski run in Australia" finishes at Friday Flat and you cannot ski from Funnel Web to Friday Flat.

When I was a younger lad and only ever skied Australia I thought it was great. Now I would never bother - even if I was back home in Australia for winter. Thin layer of icy pack v a few metres deep of powder? There's just no comparison. And you have to pay $100 a day for the privilege!
